Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used to treat osteoarthritis and sports injuries. There is a large variety of NSAIDs available, either over the counter or by prescription. Aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Celebrex, Motrin, and Indocin are just a few of the many common medications that are classified as NSAIDs. These drugs act by reducing fever, relieving mild aches and pains, and reducing inflammation.

Inflammation occurs as part of the body’s natural healing process. The inflammatory response is your body’s way of alerting its own healing mechanisms. Your body responds to inflammation by recruiting blood platelets to the injured area, and these platelets stimulate local stem cells that initiate healing.

Regenerative procedures increase the amount of your own stem cells available for healing.  Success of your regenerative stem-cell procedure will be limited if your body’s own healing process is inhibited by use of an NSAID.

Patients undergoing a Regenexx procedure are asked to discontinue NSAID use for two to four weeks prior to their procedure and for six to 12 weeks afterward. It is important that patients consult with their Regenexx doctor before resuming any NSAID regimen after their Regenexx procedure.
